Most queries are answered on this page but if there's anything you would still like to ask then e-mail info@elasticated.co.uk.

What is Hosting?

Whenever you look at a live web site on your computer, the relevant files must be sent across the Internet from a remote computer called a server. A server must be kept on-line permanently (so that people in different time zones can see the web sites) and have fast and secure access to the infrastructure of the Internet.

Elasticated is just that! Our servers are backed up and kept on-line round the clock with fast connection to the Internet. Our clients are given space on this server to use.

Do you offer a design service?

Yes we offer a web design service and can offer full corporate identity design including leaflet design and printing.

Will you give me enough technical support?

We do this in several ways. Elasticated Support has gone to great measures to 'hold up' our clients by publishing an on-line technical directory. Clients can log into this on the index page.

If a technical solution can't be found there, we allocate a personal account manager to each of our customers who can be contacted.

Can I increase my web space?

Yes, of course.  We are elasticated by name and by nature and can accommodate your needs, regardless of size.

What's a domain name?

A domain name is a web address, Http://www.elasticated.co.uk is ours.

Primarily domain names are used as a method of easily remembering where a web site is. Successful ones are short, marketable words that indicate the type of content of a web site. Usually a domain name is the name of a company or service but there is no hard and fast rule for this, a domain name can be whatever you want it to be. Some creative and experimental Internet projects employ a much more unusual use of this system.

The name actually indicates numeric addresses (Internet Protocol (IP) numbers) used by the network. Every time you type the address of a web site into your browser, your computer contacts the relevant Domain Name Server (DNS) and obtains this IP address.  Your computer then connects to the web space for that domain name.  In order for this to work, a DNS has to be registered when a domain name is 'bought' or leased. This information is then kept on one of the universally recognized directories or registries on the Internet. A very informative glossary of technical terms is available from Network Solutions, one of the major Internet registries.

How do I check the availability of a domain name?

Use the form at the top right on the Elasticated index page.

Can I register my domain name here?

Oh all right then... seeing as it's you!

Go back to the home page, and fill in the boxes underneath "Find available domain names" to see if your choice of domain name is available.  Once you have found a suitable and available domain name, contact us and we will register it for you.

Can I transfer a name that I bought elsewhere?

Oh all right then... seeing as it's you again!

Go back to the home page, find a suitable name (with its .com/.co.uk extension) that isn't already being used, select it and follow the process on that page.

What happens when the lease runs out?

When the domain name lease is due to expire, we will inform you and give you the option to renew your registration of that name.

Elasticated has got its own DNS servers enabling us to host any domain name. However, if you are already a customer of another hosting company, they may charge you an administration fee to change your current name servers. Of course if you register your name with Elasticated you won't be charged any administration fee to change your name server.

Send us the details of your registration (URL, login & password) and well make the necessary changes.

How long does it take for my domain name to become active?

It depends on whether your name is a .com or a .co.uk. A .uk takes approx. 8 hours and a .com takes 24-48 hours.

That is because the details of the new name have to be registered with the big boys in Internet-playground! We have to be careful when we do this next time coz last time we tried to rush them and they stole our packed lunch, (bullies!).

How do I get detailed traffic statistics for my site?

You'll probably want to know a little bit about the visitors to your site and we advise our clients on the how to do this.

Log in to our Support Section for more details.

How do I transfer files to my web page?

The fastest and most effective way to do this is to use a File Transfer Protocol or FTP Client. This is software (available free) allows remote connection between systems.

Use Cute FTP for a PC or Fetch for a Mac. We'll give you the required login codes Log in to our Support Section for more details.

What is Frontpage 2000?

Frontpage 2000 is a web page editor/creator which has a simplified way of publishing your web pages on the Internet. Use an FTP client to upload files created with Frontpage 2000.

What is Cold Fusion?

Cold Fusion adds the power of databases to your web site.  With this product, you can create interactivity between your web site and something complex such as your company's product ordering database, or something personal, such as your database of movies that you've reviewed. Or, in the words of Cold Fusion's maker, Allaire Corporation:

"Cold Fusion gives developers the fastest way to build and deploy a new generation of business software for everything from electronic commerce to interactive publishing to business process automation."

What is an ASP?

ASP or Active Server Pages. This is script accessed on the server that creates an HTML/web page out put dependent on current circumstances of the server. It is commonly used by on line data bases, shopping carts etc.

Web sites that link to a data base can be a very powerful tool and as an optional extra can be added to any of our plans. Log in to our Support Section for more details.

Can I use my site commercially?

Yes. As an additional service Elasticated can implement an on line shop, negotiate a secure credit card purchasing form and advise you on worldwide mail order solutions for your product.

Can I resell space?

Yes. Our Commercial Plan allows our clients to host their own customer's web sites.

Elasticated will provide the technical support (and tuition where necessary) needed for a reseller to assure their own clients the technical support needed to maintain their web sites.

How long does it take to set up a new account?

We've developed innovative new software which uses information instantly obtained from a computer visiting this site and generates a web site based on it. This software copies  the preferences file in a visitor's operating system along with information from the cache of the network browser to do this, this software then dynamically generates an account for you on our server based on this information.

Not really (had you going!), but it doesn't take very long! i.e. same day as payment is received (or before if specifically requested).

Do you allow Adult or Warez content?

Well, that's a difficult one! If you think (or have been told) that the contents of your web sites may be looked upon as controversial, most hosting companies won't accept your site.

Elasticated is willing to be as flexible as possible, and we will give all customers due consideration.

How do I place an order?

Take a look at the plans* on the hosting page and decide what kind of service you require. You can send us an enquiry using the submission form there or just send us an e-mail to sales@Elasticated.co.uk and we'll be happy to tell you how we can help.

*The plans on this page are a guideline. Space, bandwidth, level of support and a relative cost can be negotiated.
